Stepping into a new role—or seeking greater influence in your current one—can feel like navigating uncharted territory. You want to position yourself not just as competent, but as influential. You want to progress but also leave a meaningful legacy. Here’s a proven three-step P–P Framework to help you move with clarity, confidence, and impact.
Pinpoint your unique value.
Start by listing three core strengths—skills or competencies others consistently acknowledge. These could be your knack for stakeholder alignment, systems thinking, or persuasive storytelling. Then, choose two business outcomes you want to influence: revenue, retention, innovation speed, team morale. By centering on strengths and outcomes, you move from activity-driven work to impact-driven positioning.
Craft your role narrative.
Share this message regularly: “I help us [outcome] by [strength].” For example: “I help the product team deliver faster sprints by surfacing customer insights early.” This concise line makes your contribution magnetic and memorable.
Show up in the right spaces.
Be present—whether at cross-functional meetings, project kick-offs, or leadership forums—where your expertise intersects with key decisions. Intentionally contribute and network in these spaces to elevate visibility and reinforce positioning.
Set outcome-driven goals.
Instead of generic objectives like “improve presentation skills,” aim for “lead one high-stakes leadership review by Q4 and secure follow-up project support.” Outcome-based goals anchor your efforts and spotlight results—qualities leaders notice.
Build influence muscle by influencing others.
Every role is partly about impact through others. Find a junior team member or peer to mentor or collaborate with. Progress isn’t only about your growth—it’s lifting others along the way. That ripple effect amplifies your progress.
Track and share wins strategically.
Maintain a “Victory Log”—simple highlights of your impact: cost saved, timelines accelerated, relationships built. At quarterly check-ins, integrate these real successes. Ensure your manager and cross-functional partners hear your results.
Expand your scope intentionally.
Once your primary role is solid, branch out into related areas—S&OP calls, new project domains, innovation pilots. Volunteer for a small cross-team initiative or shadow a leader in another department. Exposure + early wins build credibility for bigger responsibility.
Champion a cause that matters.
Select a high-visibility topic—culture inclusion, customer advocacy, sustainability, wellness—and become its ambassador. Leading or co-owning a company-wide initiative positions you as a multi-dimensional leader invested in the bigger picture.
Cultivate your network, offline and online.
Reach beyond your immediate circles. Engage with a professional community (LinkedIn groups, local career panels, peer boards). Share insights from your victories or your process. Public contributions like articles or panel speaking raise your professional brand—and open doors you didn’t even see.
Jasmine joined her company as a project coordinator. She was great at managing details, but wanted more strategic input. She applied the P–P Framework:
Position: Articulated, “I help Product teams eliminate 2-week delivery delays by systematizing handoffs.”
Progress: Took ownership of a new JIRA–Confluence integration pilot. Mentored two interns to ensure data consistency.
Amplify: Volunteered to co‑lead a monthly “Customer Voice” forum. Presented outcomes at the all-hands meeting.
Within nine months, she was promoted to Product Operations Manager. Her reputation as a strategic orchestrator enabled her to sit at expansion-planning conversations. She’s now helping steer not just projects, but organizational direction.
1–2 Identify your top 3 strengths and 2 business outcomes. Write your positioning line.
3–4 Set one outcome-based goal and launch your Victory Log.
5–6 Seek a stretch opportunity outside your core role. Pitch it.
7 Join or start a mini‑cause that matters—prepare a short update for your wider network.
